I Thought Everyone Else Had It Figured Out

A few days ago, someone in my class said something very casually: they already knew what they wanted to study. It wasn’t a big moment, and no one reacted much, but for some reason, it stuck with me.

Not because I disagreed, but because I felt the opposite.

I don’t know what I want to study. Not completely, not even close. And for a moment, hearing someone say it so confidently made me feel like I was behind, like there was a point where everyone else figured things out and I had somehow missed it.

After that, I started paying more attention, not in a dramatic way, just in small conversations. I began to notice how people talked about their plans, what they said when the topic came up more naturally.

And something became clear pretty quickly.

Most people aren’t as sure as they sound.

The answers were often vague: “I mean, kind of,” or “I have a few options,” or “I’ll see.” None of it was as definitive as it seemed at first. It just sounded that way because of how it was said.

That’s when I realized something interesting: confidence tends to be very visible, while uncertainty usually stays in the background.

When someone says “I know what I’m doing,” it sounds certain and complete. But that’s often just one part of the story, the part they feel comfortable sharing. The doubts, the changes of mind, and the uncertainty don’t usually get said out loud.

Because no one introduces themselves by saying they don’t know what they’re doing, even though many people feel that way at some point.

Understanding this changes the way you see things.

It makes you realize that feeling unsure doesn’t mean you’re behind. It just means you’re in the process of figuring things out, which is where most people actually are, even if it doesn’t always look like it.

Some people just express certainty more confidently. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have everything figured out.
