1. As per an article by the Washington Post, “In a cutting-edge medical experiment, a small group of people who had high cholesterol despite taking conventional drugs to lower it saw significant reductions in two major risk factors for heart disease after receiving a single gene-editing treatment at the highest dose.” The study, which was “funded by CRISPR Therapeutics, is an early-stage clinical trial with just 15 participants, but it represents a step forward in a bold quest to treat common diseases with a one-time treatment that tweaks people’s genes.”
2. According to a study by Pew Research Center, women now make up 35% of workers in the United States’ top-paying occupations, which is up from 13% in 1980. Women have increased their presence in almost all of these occupations, which include physicians, lawyers and pharmacists. However, women remain the minority in most cases; there is still progress to be made.
3. Kauai has quickly transitioned to greener electricity through collective ownership of the electricity grid. As mentioned in an article by Canary Media, an independent, nonprofit newsroom covering the transition to clean energy and solutions to the climate crisis, “Kauai used to have a Wall Street–owned, for-profit utility, much like roughly 70% of U.S. electricity customers”. They now rely on a locally-owned cooperative, pioneering the use of solar power paired with lithium-ion batteries. They now generate 60% of their electricity from renewables, primarily solar. Kauai now serves as a leading example in achieving cleaner and cheaper power for other communities in the U.S., even world-wide.
